Board Briefs – March

Unlicensed Contractor Receives 4-month Jail Time

The Board is committed to protecting the citizens of North Carolina and regulating the general contracting industry by enforcing the laws and regulations pertaining to general contracting. Contractors practicing without a license have been and continue to be a major issue and threat to our citizens and the industry. The Board has made the prosecution of unlicensed contractors found in violation a priority. Recently, a Wake County Superior Court sentenced an unlicensed general contractor to 120 days in jail for five counts of criminal contempt. The contractor, Jorge Alberto Garcia, violated a 2017 Consent Order executed in 2017 with the Board and approved by the court. In the Consent Order, the contractor agreed to stop engaging the public in projects $30,000 or more. However, the contractor was found to be in violation of the order as he continued to perform work requiring a licensed contractor.
